Update-Day160

Today marks the 160th day of the 2026 321 Challenge for Adult Literacy Ohio (ALO) – just shy of halfway to the 321 consecutive days of Bring Sally Up pushups goal (whew).

Through the help of generous donors’, contributions stand at $8,720!

There are many worthy charitable causes. Some just make us feel good, some sponsor fun events for those in need, and some positively change lives forever. I put adult literacy in this last category.

Enabling adults to read isn’t particularly glamorous. It isn’t done in a spotlight to the adulation of others. It is hard work, pure and simple. Yet I submit that enabling adults to read more profoundly improves lives more than just about any other charitable endeavor.

I chose doing the Bring Sally Up pushup exercise for the fundraiser because it takes 3 minutes and 21 seconds of hard work. It gets done every morning before I leave my bedroom and there is no glamour involved – trust me. This is precisely the type of hard work your contributions make possible for those adults wanting to improve their lives through literacy. These adults are willing to do the work if you will just help.

Adult Literacy Ohio is sponsoring a Summer Reading Challenge beginning June 10th through August 3rd. Participants will be able to set your own reading goal, read at your own pace, and choose to read books, audiobooks, magazines or anything you enjoy. Participants can earn raffle entries by:

  • Signing up for the challenge

  • Reaching your reading goals

  • Make a donation of any amount

The Summer Reading Challenge will culminate with an Ice Cream Social at Jeni’s Ice Cream in Clintonville on August 3 from 4 – 7 pm. Those attending will celebrate their goals with friends and raffle prizes will be chosen. Jeni’s will be donating 25% of the proceeds to ALO. I’m told my ice cream loving son Alex had nothing to do with the Jeni’s location for the celebration, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Visit https://adultliteracyohio.org/ for more information.

I will leave you with this picture of a recent birthday present I received from my son Alex who has been helped by ALO. With ALO’s help he is reading well enough that he was able to select what I consider to be a fantastic gift and a testament to how Alex lives his life. I look at it every morning.

Thank you for your generosity.
